This is a review of the Adelaide Central YHA Backpackers Hostel which I stayed at over the Queens Birthday long weekend.
I was already familiar with the facilities at Adelaide Central YHA because I’d stayed there for a few days previously in 2003 and this time around I was allocated the same 6-share dorm as last time!
I got to the hostel via the Jetbus from Adelaide Airport to the City, getting off at Stop D1 on Currie St. From there it’s only a few 100m walk to the Hostel’s front entrance on Waymouth St
Anyone can get accommodation at a YHA like Adelaide Central, but it’s slightly cheaper if you’re a member of YHA Australia or another member country of Hostelling International and you can get pretty good discounts while travelling at tourist sites or even private hostels if you show them your YHA card.
This is how the hostel describes it’s services:
Located in the heart of the city – picturesque Light Square. Fully air-conditioned, modern facilities, large self-catering kitchen, dining room, TV rooms, Foxtel, bike hire, free linen, tea/coffee and storage, 24-hr internet/staff security access.
Wireless internet is now available. Group facilities with conference room special group rates on application. WINNER of South Australia Tourism award for ‘Best Backpacker Accommodation’ 2003, 2004 and 2005
I reckon that Adelaide Central YHA is the best large hostel in a major city out of dozens of hostels I’ve stayed at around the world.
Some of the great features include:
- Friendly staff at reception which is open 24 hours/day
- You can buy basic food at reception and breakfast ingredients for $5 (see photo)
- The kitchen is huge, with lots of clean tea towlels and has all the pots, pans and utensils you need
- The common room/games/tv area next to the kitchen is a great place to relax during the day and read a book or chat to fellow travellers or to play pool, table tennis or various board games.
- The dorm/share rooms all have huge lockers (bring your own padlock) which can easily fit a large backpack and your daypack with space to spare.
- Internet access is available via wireless or using the computers next to reception
The other people who have left comments with the hostel seem to agree because it has a 5 star rating and a customer rating of 90% or better eg:

Wireless interenet is available in the whole building and for the first time (in my experience) it’s actually cheaper than using their computers, 5hours for $10 is great value (it can get even cheaper if you use more).
